In September, we will officially begin our curriculum for this year. We will start our Academic, Safety, and Biblical curriculum the week of September 7th, and we will start our Personal Safety curriculum the week of September 20th.

We also will start having homework assignments the week of September 7th. The homework folder should be taken home each Monday and brought back to school on Friday with the completed assignment and a parent signature. These assignments are a review of what we have been working on at school. Please spend time with your child each night practicing their skills. Let me know if you have any questions regarding the homework procedures.

August 30 - September 3, 2010

This week, we will be learning:

·         Letter: None this week

·         Numbers 1-10

·         Shape: Heart, Star

·         Color: Brown, Pink

Special Activities:

This week, we will focus on each child’s individuality. We will play a rhyming game to see what words (real or make-believe) rhyme with their names. We will measure their heights, and study each child’s unique fingerprints, discussing how no two fingerprints are alike.  I will trace each child’s body and allow them to draw on themselves, and they will also create a self-portrait. I will work with the children to fill in ‘All About Me’ sheets to show their personalities at this part of the school year, which will be used again toward the end of the school year.

We will play ‘Hide and Seek’ with the numbers 1-10 throughout our room. The children will practice recognition of each number, and count to that number when they find it.

Our colors this week are brown and pink, and we will search for brown hearts or pink stars throughout the room. The children will receive points based on how many they find!

**This week, I will also be working on 4 year old assessments for each of my children. You will receive a copy of your child’s assessment once all of them have been completed.

September 7-10, 2010

Theme:                      Labor Day/Community Helpers

This week, we begin our academic curriculum by focusing on the letter ‘I’.  We will practice the sounds of I, recognition of I, and writing Ii. We will also build I’s out of blocks, make I’s with our bodies, and ‘inch’ like inchworms.  At the end of the week, we will celebrate Ii with a special cold treat! We will learn about the concept of ‘same’ versus ‘different’, and sort items into categories. We will also discuss why we celebrate Labor Day. Our focus this week revolves around Community Helpers, as this ties in to our safety curriculum. We will act out various community helpers, like firemen, policemen, dentists, and doctors.

We also begin our safety curriculum, led by the Collierville Fire Department. They will come on Wednesday morning to discuss Community Helpers. This curriculum will continue throughout the school year; the Fire Department will come once each month.

Last, we will begin our Bible curriculum with the story, ‘God made Daytime and Nighttime’. We will discuss the differences in daytime and nighttime, and celebrate God’s gift to us. Our classroom worship will take place on Monday afternoons each week.

Discipline Policies for Ms. Katie’s classroom

You may notice a bulletin board in our classroom in the Home Living area. This board, titled ‘Every Day is a Fry Day’ is to help us be on our best behavior throughout the week. Each child has three ‘fries’ in their fry carton, and if they act up during the day, the fries can be taken away. Fries can also be given back if they have better behavior later in the day.

If all of the children have three fries consistently, we will be able to put a ‘cookie’ in our cookie jar at the end of the day. When the jar is filled, we will have a special treat—cookies, brownies, etc. brought into the classroom.  If any individual child keeps their three fries consistently, they can visit the treasure box at the end of the week. If a child loses three fries in one day, they will go to time-out and will not be able to go to the treasure box on Friday.

It would be very helpful if you could bring in small items for the treasure box—McDonald’s Happy Meal items, bubbles, erasers, etc. This will encourage good behavior for all of the children in our classroom—they love being able to visit the treasure box!  We will spend time discussing good behavior, tattling, and hurting our friends. I’d appreciate any assistance you can give me!

We also have a ‘friend’ in our classroom on top of the mailboxes—Little Ms. Katie. She is for the sole purpose of tattling. Unless the children are hurt or there is an emergency, they can tell Little Miss Katie their problems. This helps to cut down on the large amount of tattling that may go on throughout the day in a 4/5 year old classroom, which can take up much of our learning and playing time!

Please let me know if you have any questions!
